Isn’t this just the plainest shift you’ve ever seen?
I made it with fabric left over from a pair of fisherpants, to wear with the pants. The pattern is neue mode S22859. I have no idea how I came into possession of it.
So that’s the pants and shift together. It’s a very earthy look, isn’t it? I wonder if the colour is not good so close to my face (better for bottoms than for tops?)
It is my intention to dress it up, like this:
I’ve been seeing long dresses paired with pants, but I’m not sure how I feel about this combo. Does anyone see cultural appropriation? I’m wondering if the shift should be either bigger/looser or tighter? I made no alterations to the pattern other than to lower the bust darts about half an inch, and shorten the sleeves because I ran out of fabric. I made the necklace out of glass beads.

I really really like it…. the linnen-looking fabric fits well. But if worn with pants I’d shorten the shift, maybe because I’m used to the “punjabi dress” in India… maybe take in the waist a touch. A colourful scarf/ necklace make a prefect spark to the earthy colours 🙂

I’m really fond of clothes that have a loose fitting look but are still elegant, so this is right down my alleyI really like this, and although I personally prefer to wear more color, I appreciate the cool and serene look you get with a mild color like this one. The scarf and the necklace give a nice touch. I don’t think it shold be any looser, the slight figure shape is what makes it so classy. I definately get Indian vibes, but don’t see it as a problem. Nice job!

I see what you mean – it has a bit of a salwar kameez flavor, but that is such a graceful, elegant practical garment…I say “rock on”. The addition of a scarf and necklace add just the right spark. Lovely, and SO well fitting.

I’m glad you like it Silver. It is a really comfortable outfit, although I didn’t expect it to have such a salwar kameez vibe. It’s because of the pant legs, isn’t it? I’ll try the shift with some other trousers.

I really like this look. The neutral color is pretty bland but that makes it great for an accent color like you’ve done. I’m wearing the flowy pants under dresses and tunics now and like how free it feels. The fit is good on you and if you’re daring, you can wear the shift alone on a hot day and air it out. Culturally? Yes, it’s vaguely foreign. But only because the western world hasn’t discovered this look until now.

I love this. And I have to make something similar for myself. I can’t think of anything more comfortable in summer heat. Light trousers are great (no sweaty thighs rubbing against each other), and a loose tunic on top is perfect. Yes, I thought “shalwar kameez” the moment I saw this outfit, but so what? First of all, I dare say it’s allowed to be inspired, and second – it would be too bad if anything that looks vaguely Indian/Pakistani should be met with shouts of “cultural appropriation!” Besides, I’ve yeat to meet someone with that heritage who minds. They’re more like “finally you’re catching up” and that’s not a bad thing.
